Arezzo, July 22, 2025 - "Villa Chianini al Pionta must not be forgotten. A shared project is needed to restore its dignity." A note from Councilor Michele Menchetti
There are two Villa Chianinis in Arezzo. One is located on Via dell'Acropoli, near the stadium, and is a functioning day center, in excellent condition. It is managed by the Metropoli cooperative, led by Progetto 5, under the auspices of the South East Tuscany Local Health Authority (ASL Toscana Sud Est). It offers important support, independence, and assistance services for people with disabilities. It is a virtuous example of collaboration between public bodies and the third sector, and it is a good thing that, with Resolution No. 378 of July 15, 2025, the Municipality of Arezzo has declared its willingness to contribute to the maintenance costs of this service. And then there is another Villa Chianini, much more historic and officially recognized, located at the top of the Colle del Pionta Park. This property is also owned by the South East Tuscany Local Health Authority (ASL Toscana Sud Est), but unfortunately, in a state of complete disrepair, it was formerly a nursing home. Since the decision was made to discontinue providing that service, it has been left to its own devices, with no prospects.
It could easily be a case of double standards, but the issue goes further: the point is that, with a genuine joint effort between the Local Health Authority, the Municipality, and third-sector organizations, it would be possible to develop a concrete project to restore dignity and social function to this historic structure. We've been calling for attention to this issue for over eight years. Now that the next City Council will discuss a matter related to the Pionta Park project, this could finally be the right opportunity to move from words to action.
